The SBGCA meeting was called to order by President, Joyce Barton at 10:08 am followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Joyce thanked the Port Malabar Garden Club for hosting the meeting, providing the speaker and luncheon to follow.
Board Members present: Joyce Barton, President; Judy Ying, Vice President; Kathryn Merry, Secretary; Carol Robitschek, Treasurer.
The minutes were not provided for the Dec. 2nd meeting. Kathryn provided an apology.
Treasurer’s Report: Carol reported $2,699.27 in the SBGCA account. The December Auction raised $528.50.
Roll Call of the Garden Clubs:
Beach Gardeners of Melbourne Beach (2) Joyce Barton, President, reported the program on Jan 21st meeting was Miss Mango’s Herb Appeal and the Feb 18th meeting speaker will be Larry Wilson of Pappa’s Backyard Honey. She also announced on a recent Community Service Day, 50 students from Hoover Middle School participated in a service project at Bicentennial Park on A1A in helping to spruce up the park.
Garden Club by the Sea (4) – Gloria Mandel, Rep., reported the Dec. 11th meeting was their Holiday Get-Together; the Jan. 15th meeting was a field trip to Rock City Garden with a tour and lunch in the café with 19 attending; and the Feb 19th meeting will be a DYI program on Repotting Orchids by Paul Price and will be held at the Melb Bch Comm Ctr.
Indian Harbor Beach Garden Club (2) – Carol Robitschek, reported the Holiday Party held Dec 11th at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club was well attended; the Jan 15th meeting was a presentation by the Sea Turtle Preservation Society. Their Annual Bunco Fundraiser held Jan 22 was a huge success netting $3,900 which will go towards send youth to FFGC’s Wekiva Youth Summer Camp.
Island Garden Club (4) – Julia Hill, President, reported their Jan. 8th meeting was a program on hardscaping by Tom & Gina Carrella of Sun State Pavers & Landscaping; the Feb 12th meeting will be a field trip, tour & lunch to Rock City Gardens; and in Mar they will meet at the Yoga Garden in Eau Gallie. She thanked SBGCA members for their donations of personal care items for the Women’s Center basket. IGC continues to maintain Douglas Park and to participate in monthly beach clean-ups.
Melbourne Garden Club (6) – Sandy Dix, President, reported the program for Jan 3rd meeting was member Harriett Mirsajadi presenting personal safety and resources for Seniors; the Feb 7th meeting will host Sally Scalera presenting “Regenerative Gardening”. All are welcome to attend. MGC presented a housewarming Gardening Basket to the homeowner at a recent Habitat for Humanity House Warming event in Booker T. Washington. This is the last house to be built and this sub-division is now complete.
Port Malabar Garden Club (20) – Becky Savage, President, reported their Jan 10th program was Connie Adams on Collecting Rain Water and their Jan. field trip was to Rockledge Gardens; and the Feb 14th meeting will be presented by Seaside Succulents. They are hosting a yard sale at the Peace Lutheran Church, 1801 Port Malabar Blvd NE, on Friday, March 20.
Sunshine Report – Ann Stott has cards to send; please give her names, addresses, garden club affiliation and the reason for the card.
Plant Sale Report – Marci McLean encouraged members to bring in plants to not only increase funds raised for our Florida Penny Pines Contribution but to also increase selection.
Door Prize Drawing –Charlotte Underwood conducted the door prize drawing. The doorprize was won by Kathy Fox.
- Joyce inquired to members about the website and encouraged its use & the need to keep it up-to-date.
- Joyce created & distributed a Newsletter using Mail Chimp (later upgraded to Constant Contact). Members are encouraged to sign-up to receive.
- Kathryn also reminded members that new name tags will continually be made and that members without a name tag need to sign-in as they want their name to appear with their Garden Club name.
- Next Board meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 11th at the Judy Ying’s home at 2 pm. Presidents and Club reps are welcome to attend.
- Next General meeting will be hosted by Beach Gardeners on Mon, Mar 02 at 10 am at the Melbourne Beach Community Center, 509 Ocean Avenue. The speaker will be Bruce Morgan on Composting. Note change in location.

The program speakers, Tim and Anna of Butterfly Flowers LLC spoke on native plants and pollinator plants for Florida landscaping. Their nursery is located on Hield Road where they have received their Occupational License from City of Palm Bay and will also be opening an outlet in the Melbourne area. Currently they sell their plants at the Farmer’s Market in Vero.
